Daniel Wells beats Mark Allen 5-3!

That's a brilliant win for Daniel! Mark will be disappointed with how he played, but he'll reconigse his opponent had a good day, and he's stll in decent shape for the Tour Championship and the Cruce.

Allen 3-4 Wells (34-66)

This is so calm! Daniel does the necessary without blinking, and he's been superb since the interval.

Allen 3-4 Wells (34-45)

HAVE A LOOK! From on top, Mark tries nudging a red along the top rail and into right corner, misses ... and elaves it in the jaws! Colossal chance for Daniel, who knows he ought to clear from here - which in a way, makes his task that bit harder. No matter! He takes them beautifully, and he's a black-yellow-green combo away from the match!

Allen 3-4 Wells (15-16)

Yet another long safety exchange, then Mark guides a straight diagonal to left corner; it took real bottle, did that, becaue he knew a miss could mean curtains. Bottle, though, is one thing yer man doesn't lack, and he quickly closes the gap - in the knowledge that one miss still meas curtains, if anything even more so.

Allen 3-4 Wells (0-16)

Yeah, except he runs out of position as soon as i type that anda cagey safety passage ensues, both men aware the other is playing well and keeping a tight reign on themselves accordingly.

Allen 3-4 Wells (0-16)

Mark overcuts to left corner ... chance for Daniel! The balls aren't great but there are points out there...

Allen 3-4 Wells (0-4)

Daniel punches a fine starter intonright corner ad both men are now playing quite well, certainly better than in the first mini-sesh. But the balls aren't great, so hesoon hss to play safe off the brown.

Around the tables

Ishpreet Singh Chadha 3-4 Yuan SiJun
Jamie Jones 4-5 Ricky Walden
Matt Selt 3-3 Wang Xinbo

Allen 3-4 Wells

Mark's played poorly today but pslitting the first four frames might just save him. A run of 103 brings him to witihn a frame.

Allen 2-4 Wells (75-0)

A tricky black from near the side and Daniel needs snookers, a gorgeous red to left-middle sealoing the deal. Mark might just've been prompted to play well by his opponent playing well.

Allen 2-4 Wells (46-0)

this is more like it, Mark slotting blue into yellow and bumping the pack to dislodge another red or two. I almost think he does it on purpose, getting himself into these scrapes for the fun of extricating himself from them, and this looks like a one-shot kill.

Allen 2-4 Wells (9-0)

Mark loves a scrap so won't be giving this one up. He eases a long starter into right corner, holds for the black, and he's in business.

Around the tables

Ishpreet Singh Chadha 3-3 Yuan SiJun
Jamie Jones 4-4 Ricky Walden
Matt Selt 3-3 Wang Xinbo

Allen 2-4 Wells

A 63 followed by a 78, and Mark needs three straight to win; Daniel just needs to keep doing what he's doing.

Allen 2-3 Wells (0-45)

Daniel's grown in confidence through this match and this is a really confident break. He knows Mark isn't at it and he knows this is a chance for huge win in terms of his career so the way he's holding it down is very impressive.

Allen 2-3 Wells (0-20)

Daniel misses to left corner but gets away with it because Mark undercuts to right corner. That's a very poor shot and he's up off it straighy away, complaining that there was movement in his eyeline. Chance for the underdog, who gets away, breaks the pack ... asnd this is a very nice chance!

Around the tables

Ishpreet Singh Chadha 3-3 Yuan SiJun
David Grace 4-5 Kyren Wilson
Jak Jones 0-5 Ashley Hugill
Jamie Jones 4-3 Ricky Walden
Jenson Kendrick 2-5 Barry Hawkins
Ding Junhui 5-3 Zak Surety
Matt Selt 2-3 Wang Xinbo

Allen 2-3 Wells

A run of 63 secures the frame and Daniel is two away - though closing out against Mark is not an easty pastime.

Allen 2-2 Wells (1-48)

Great work from Daniel, who resuces a dicky opening pot then sets about eliminating all the balls he should. This should be 3-2.

Allen 2-2 Wells (1-30)

Mark gets in but leaves his first black on the edge, and this is another chance for Daniel. But when he goes into the bunch they split beautifully, except he's on none of them, and after a long think he plays a poor safety - knowing that whoever pots next has a reallygood chance of taking control of the frame - at least. Mark, though, can't sink a long starter so Daniel is in again, pretty much everything there for him.

Ishpreet Singh Chadha 2-3 Yuan SiJun
David Grace 2-4 Kyren Wilson
Jak Jones 0-4 Ashley Hugill
Jamie Jones 3-2 Ricky Walden
Jenson Kendrick 2-4 Barry Hawkins
Ding Junhui 5-3 Zak Surety
Matt Selt 1-3 Wang Xinbo

Allen 2-2 Wells

Yup, Mark levels the match despite pausing to wait following a commotion at the end of the Ding match. Daniel has missed a big chance here, but if his opponent doesn't improve, he's still a good chance of nicking this.

Allen 1-2 Wells (45-46)

Mark bins balls then gets on to the side rail for the final red. He removes the extension and composes because this is a crucial shot ... and he sends it down beautifully, playing it with power to go down the table for a colour. He's looking good to level the match.

Allen 1-2 Wells (30-46)

Daniel runs out of position so plays safe, and this frame looks like turning into another marathon ... but then Daniel snaps a starter into right corner and extends his lead in the frame, but can he split either pod of two reds off the blue? Yes he can! But it's a tricky pot to right-middle, frame-ball really, so pressure ... and he undercuts, contacting the far jaw, and this is now a chance for Mark to end the mini-sesh level. That would be quite an escape because he's played poorly here.

Allen 1-2 Wells (24-19)

Another long safety battle, then mark misses a red he shouldn't following an error from Daniel - who now has a chance for 3-1! there are reds on black cush and others near the side, but there might be away of getting most of them down right corner if he picks the correct order in which to eliminate them.

YES ZAK SURETY! ZAK SURETY MAKES A 147!

A maxi, against Ding Junhui, in China, in front of a full house! Fantastic moment for a player who's struggled with anxiety, and doesn't he look delighted! This game, mates - that is why we love it.

Zak smiles

He's low on the blue, but he punches it down left-middle, playing for pink into corner ... but he runs past it, so here we go to the middle ... AND IT'S THERE! Black for a maxi!

Allen 1-2 Wells (14-0)

Er yeah, this match is in no hurry - no hurry whatsoever. But as I type and after much safety, Daniel strikes hard into right corner ... only to land on nowt. Meantime, on table one, Zak Surety is on a maxi, so our boys have stopped with Daniel tight in behind the green. Zak sinks his 15th black, colours on spots! GO ON ZAK!

Allen 1-2 Wells (14-0)

Twice, Mark quickly gets in and out, so we're playing safety with the reds starting to block each other.

Around the tables

Ishpreet Singh Chadha 2-1 Yuan SiJun
David Grace 2-3 Kyren Wilson
Jak Jones 0-2 Ashley Hugill
Jamie Jones 2-2 Ricky Walden
Jenson Kendrick 0-4 Barry Hawkins
Ding Junhui 3-2 Zak Surety
Matt Selt 1-2 Wang Xinbo

Allen 1-2 Wells

That pink to right-middle might be the ball. Mark imposes due punishment, and given how reliably good he is, you expect him to go on from here.

Allen 0-2 Wells (56-44)

Mark pauses because the scoreboard is slow in keeping up with him, but he's now lozzed the remaining reds so it's colours off their spotsm to brown, for the frame.

Allen 0-2 Wells (28-44)

Daniel carefully accumulates - he knows this is a huge chance, because from 3-0 it's a long way back for anyone against anyone. But as I type he misses a pink to right-middle and might that be a turning point? Though Mark's had chances in this frame already, he'll know that he can't afford to botch this one too, quickly picking off loose balls before opening what's left of the pack. He's now favourite to make it 1-2.

Allen 0-2 Wells (11-1)

That's more like it: Mark leathers a starter into right corner, adds a blue then a tricky red ... only to totally lose the white off the green. So it's a safety and the world number three just can't get going ... all the more so when he sinks a starter only to leave blue on gthe lip of left-middke. Another chance for Daniel, and what a boon it'd be for him to go three in front!

Around the tables

Ishpreet Singh Chadha 2-0 Yuan SiJun
David Grace 2-2 Kyren Wilson
Jak Jones 0-1 Ashley Hugill
Jamie Jones 1-2 Ricky Walden
Jenson Kendrick 0-3 Barry Hawkins
Ding Junhui 2-2 Zak Surety
Matt Selt 1-2 Wang Xinbo

Allen 0-2 Wells

When Daniel breaks down, Mark stays in his seat, and though it takes the ref a while to rtwig, it doesn't change the reality: the underdog leads 2-0!

Allen 0-1 Wells (4-70)

He has to settle for a red-pink, but keeps going to secure the frame.

Allen 0-1 Wells (4-62)

He doesn't miss but he does run out of psoition, playing safe 58 in front with 74 on the table. Those four points Mark earned earlier are not unhelpful because without them, a red-black for Daniel seals the frame.

Allen 0-1 Wells (4-54)

Danel's starting to enjoy this, taking these very nicely indeed - secure in the knowledge that should he miss, Mark will need to go some to steal given the whereabouts of the balls, reds tricky and colours on cushions.

Allen 0-1 Wells (4-25)

So far, this is not a good match, but Daniel is enjoying it well enough. He strokes a simplestarter into left corner and will know that with Mark - who now has his four - not at it yet, he's a chance to take a huge scalp.

Allen 0-1 Wells (0-17)

Daniel gets away to left corner only to get too close to a red and playing safe; then Mark flukes a snooker and when the escape works well enough, we end up with the players poking in and out of touching balls, white between reds. I think Daniel is called for foul, feathering the white, but there've been no points added to Mark's score and round we go again.

Around the tables

Ishpreet Singh Chadha 2-0 Yuan SiJun
David Grace 2-1 Kyren Wilson
Jak Jones 0-1 Ashley Hugill
Jamie Jones 0-2 Ricky Walden
Jenson Kendrick 0-2 Barry Hawkins
Ding Junhui 1-2 Zak Surety

Allen 0-1 Wells

The underdog hits the front.

Allen 0-0 Wells (5-55)

Mark manages a red and a black but no more, then Daniel finally puts a frankly dreadful frame out of its misery.

Allen 0-0 Wells (5-55)

He cannot, meaning Mark needa all the balls to tie as we tick over the 43-minute mark.

Allen 0-0 Wells (5-55)

Er, but. Mark gets in and if he can promote the three reds on or near the top rail, it'll be a real heel to Daniel's solar plexus. Ach but he can't, a ball missed along black cush handing his opponent a chance to finally put this frame out of its misery.

Allen 0-0 Wells (5-55)

Daniel can't quite finishthe frame, but gvien the location of the five remaining reds, he's a very strong favourite.

Allen 0-0 Wells (5-41)

But again, after quite some time, it's Daniel who pots the next ball - Mark has started very slowly - and even if he can't win the frame at this visit, he can get close by potting the loose ones, secure in the knowledge that Mark will need all the hard ones to best him.

Allen 0-0 Wells (5-29)

Daniel feathers the white by mistake so the ref calls a foul, then Mark strokes home a starter and tucks in behind the yellow. He's got very good at winning fames like this one, and I fancy him to take this.

Allen 0-0 Wells (0-29)

Another scoring chance for Daniel, another spurned scoring chance for Daniel, a red missed to the yellow; he holds up a hand to apologise for leaving nothing. Mark, though, misses a thin contact and the safty goes round again.

Allen 0-0 Wells (0-8)

Or not. Daniel, left not only a starter but an exceedingly presentable chance .... misses a red to left corner. Ach, that'll be a real sickener because it's the kind of chance he really must take, but at least he doesn't offer Mark anything

Allen 0-0 Wells (0-2)

It's a slow start and, with the black over right corner, this may now be a long frame.

Our boyz baize....

Judd Trump beats Rory Thor 5-2!

A 113 secures a meeting with Sanderson Lam. That was a fun match, and if Judd's playing like that in round one, it tells the field they've a problem stopping him.

Trump 4-2 Thor (106-11)

Of course he can, 70th of the aseason and his 971st overall. What a total genius.

Trump 4-2 Thor (58-11)

There being no pyrotechnics to report tells us how well Judd's taking these, balls stroked home with no recovery heroics. A red to right corner is match ball ... and down it goes! Can the champ finish with a second ton of the match?

Trump 4-2 Thor (36-11)

Yup, this looks like the end, and Rory will be relatively pleased with how he's played yet disappointed by a few key misses that've proved the difference here.

Trump 4-2 Thor (14-11)

And when judd gets in he'l be regretting his tentativeness because, with the pack quickly opened, the match might soon be over.

Trump 4-2 Thor (5-11)

Judd can't converty a starter into anything sub sub sub sub substantial but nor can Rory, who plays a little safe when seeking to disturb reds off blue. I get why - anymistake and it could be curtains - but he's got to play aggressively if he's to win three on the spin.

Around the tables

Zhang Anda 2-3 Allan Taylor
Lukas Kleckers 3-1 Dominic Dale
Sean O'Sullivan 1-5 Joe Perry
Stuart Carrington 2-2 David Lilley
Xu Si 3-3 Shaun Murphy
Si Jiahui 2-3 Long Zeuhuang

Trump 4-2 Thor

That's the difference isn't it? Rory can't quite play well enough for long enough, but Judd can.

Trump 3-2 Thor (28-53)

Judd quickly gets rid of the developed reds, and it's colours for 4-2.

Trump 3-2 Thor (4-53)

More good work from Rory, the loose balls eliminated with no fuss. Just the four reds on the top rail to go, can he promote any off the black? Yes he can, so this along the cushion plus a colour to leave Judd needing snookers ... but he jawses it! It'd kill him if Judd stole this, but that does nt look unlikely.

Trump 3-2 Thor (4-4)

Starters for both but little more, then Judd flukes another with a horrible shot; Rory does not look all that amused. But a missed yellow leaves a chance, Rory drains it easily, and though the table isn't that inviting, various reds either stuck together or cushioned, there are points to be had.

Around the tables

Zhang Anda 1-3 Allan Taylor
Lukas Kleckers 3-1 Dominic Dale
Sean O'Sullivan 0-4 Joe Perry
Stuart Carrington 1-2 David Lilley
Xu Si 2-3 Shaun Murphy
Si Jiahui 2-2 Long Zeuhuang

Trump 3-2 Thor

Rory quickly closes out, and the match is still alive.

Trump 3-1 Thor (20-75)

A fine recovery-red leaves Judd needing a snooker to tie, and when he returns to the table immediately afterwards, Rory unable to find another pot, he immediately leaves a cut-back along the side. Down it goes, and this has been a very fine frame from Rory.

Trump 3-1 Thor (20-67)

A dreadful positonal shot means a nasty cut to the yellow and in comms, Neal is certain he'll sink it because he's that kind of player ... and he does because he is. Judd needs a snooker.

Trump 3-1 Thor (20-44)

More good work from Rory, but he's be cognisant of what happened in frame two, Judd stealing from him what ought to have been his. There are two reds close to the side that he'll need but he's taking these nicely.

Trump 3-1 Thor (20-1)

A dreaful shot from Rory hands Judd four and a chance. He slaughters home a pink, breaks the pack, and seems to have done the hard work as regards extending his lead. But with all these balls still to pot, anything can still happen ... such as the plant he's about to take on ... but he straightens it well ... only to leave a tight pink. He just can't find prime position and as so often happens, he eventually misses his pot and can Rory take advantage of the starter he's been left?

We go again...

Sean O'Sullivan 0-4 Joe Perry
Stuart Carrington 1-2 David Lilley
Xu Si 1-3 Shaun Murphy
Si Jiahui 2-1 Long Zeuhuang

Trump 3-1 Thor

A total clearance of 130 gives Judd a two-frame lead at the break. We'll be back in 15.

Trump 2-1 Thor (74-0)

It's inconceivable this won't be yet another ton.

Trump 2-1 Thor (68-0)

In no time at all, Judd secures the frame and, as Philip Sutdd notes, this is a pretty high level of match. It's hard to see how the champ loses it, but it's a contest; he's been asked to paly well to win it.

Trump 2-1 Thor (28-0)

Nice starter from Judd, eased to left corner, and he won't want to allow Rory back into the match prior to the mid-sesh. There's a lot of work to do and the pack will soon need breaking, but he's looking decent.

Zhang Anda 1-2 Allan Taylor
Lukas Kleckers 1-1 Dominic Dale
Sean O'Sullivan 0-3 Joe Perry
Stuart Carrington 1-2 David Lilley

Trump 2-1 Thor

Well done Rory Thor.

Trump 2-0 Thor (1-93)

Cn Rory promote the side-railed final red to move towarda a ton? He cannot, nor can he guide it down the cushion, but he won't mind.

Trump 2-0 Thor (1-70)

A black confidently despatched leaves Judd needing a snooker and this is great stuff from Rory, who might've shrunk after having the previous frame robbed from him.

Trump 2-0 Thor (1-46)

Rory is a good player capable of excellence, which is why he's now in the midst of another potentially frame-winning break. If he can't see it through, it'll sting like billy-o, but for now he's in great shape - though running out of easy balls.

Trump 2-0 Thor (1-15)

Judd sinks a starter but, on nothing, he leaves the white in the middle of the bottom rail allowing Rory to coax one into right-middle. He soon runs out of position ... but no matter, a gorgeous red along black cush and he's in business at the business end. Can he make it count this time?

Trump 2-0 Thor

Great clearance from Judd, long way back from here for Rory.

Trump 1-0 Thor (58-59)

Judd leaves himself a nasty cut on the pink, Rory looking poorly in his seat ... and he cuts it home beautifully. Black for 2-0...

Trump 1-0 Thor (40-59)

Judd will fancy himself to steal this if he can get in next, because the balls are nicely located. And shonudff, he drills a fine starter into right corner that makes him favourite for the frame, and this would devastate Rory. But in potting the penultimate red, he sends the ultimate down the table, and does it pot to the yellow bag? I think it does ... it does ... and this is going to be 2-0.

Trump 1-0 Thor (7-59)

Rory runs out of position and manages to keep the break going with a pair of decent recovery-pots, but eventually he loses the run of the run. So Judd sinks a starter then nuzzles in behind the yellow, frame very much alive. Rory misses his first escape, hitting the pink.

Trump 1-0 Thor (0-45)

Now then. Rory settles in, opens the pack, and looks in good shape to level the match. But any miss and he's leaving plenty.

Trump 1-0 Thor (0-15)

Rory takes a long bathroom break then steers a fine starter into right corner and gets going.

Trump 1-0 Thor

it takes a while, but Judd gets there in the end.

Trump 0-0 Thor (67-24)

It's Judd in again and this will now be the frame.

Trump 0-0 Thor (56-24)

Oh Rory. He leaves a red to left-middle ... but again, Judd can't use the opportunity to secure the frame, forced to leave whiote amid the four remaining reds. The frame remains in the balance.

Trump 0-0 Thor (48-24)

This is the first World Open since Covid, Judd eventually getting to defend his title, and he smokes a long red to right corner to give himself a chance of taking the lead. He needs to liberate reds from the cluster but his first little ruffle, off the blue, does nothing, nor his second off the black. So, will he take on one that needs sending long, white very close to object-ball? ...No he won't, instead trusting his safety game.

Trump 0-0 Thor (30-24)

An error from Judd lets Rory in but he can't make much of it, then Judd gets going only to be stymied when a cannon doesn't work out; we're back playing safety, the race on to five frames.

Morning all!
