Austria’s Anna Gasser became the first Olympic big air champion after taking gold ahead of USA’s Jamie Anderson in the ladies’ inaugural final in Pyeongchang.
The winner was determined by taking the riders’ best two runs from a possible three, and Gasser’s huge final jump of 96.00 was enough to secure her the gold - when added to her second-jump score of 89.00.
Gasser's total of 185.00 was comfortably clear of Anderson, who claimed silver with 177.25 (90.00 and 87.25), while New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski Synnott claimed bronze with a score of 157.50 (65.50 and 92.00).
Anderson, who successfully defended her slopestyle gold last week, laid down an early marker with a 90.00 in her first run, with Gasser slotting into second after scoring 85.50.
Gasser improved with her second attempt, scoring 89.00 to Anderson’s 87.25, while Sadowski Synnott posted 92.00 to move up into bronze-medal position.
In the final run, neither Anderson or Sadowski Synnott landed jumps capable of besting their previous two scores, but last out the gate, Gasser landed a 96.00 to steal gold at the death and write her name into the history books.
