Canada was the scene for the first World Cup of the season and Mulder clearly had itchy feet, eager to get his campaign off to the perfect start.
And he did exactly that, improving on his silver medals from Heerenveen in 2010 and Harbin two years later as he came home in 34.41 seconds for victory.
Mulder's time was only 0.09 seconds off Jan Smeekens' Dutch record, while Mo Tae-Bum of South Korea was second and Canadian Jamie Gregg was third.
In the ladies 500m world record holder Sang-Hwa Lee of Korea got her World Cup campaign off to the perfect start as she claimed the opening victory.
Lee's time of 36.91 seconds saw her take the gold, German Jenny Wolf settling for silver and China's Beixing Wang taking bronze.
Germany's Claudia Pechstein also got her World Cup season off to a flyer as she claimed gold in the ladies 3000m, coming home in 3:59.04 minutes.
And in the men's 1500m it was a Dutch one-two as Koen Verweij took gold and compatriot Kjeld Nuis claimed silver, Russian Ivan Skobrev joining them on the podium.
