Yamada continues fine start as Japan claim three speed skating golds on home ice

Masaya Yamada won his second gold at the season-opening World Cup event in Obihiro as Miho Takagi also topped the podium. Yamada backed up his 1000m victory on Friday in Obihiro with a narrow win in the longer distance, while compatriot Miho Takagi won the women's 1500m. The action concludes on Sunday with the women's 3000m, men's 5000m and the mixed gender relay.

Masaya Yamada continued his fine start to the season with a second win on home ice in the men's 1500m.
Yamada backed up his 1000m victory on Friday in Obihiro with a narrow win in the longer distance, while compatriot Miho Takagi won the women's 1500m.
Japan were denied a clean sweep on day two of the season-opening speed skating World Cup with the men's team unable to match the women's trio who swooped gold in the team pursuit.
The 27-year-old Yamada finished just 0.02 seconds ahead of Jordan Stolz of the USA, who claimed silver ahead of Zhongyan Ning of China by four-thousandths of a second.
Takagi was a much more comfortable winner in the women's 1500m, beating Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong of the Netherlands by 1.69 seconds with Kimi Goetz of the USA 0.33 seconds further back.
Two-time Olympic champion Takagi led for the final three laps of the race to claim her first gold of the season after finishing second in yesterday's 1000m.
Japan, the Beijing 2022 silver medallists, took women's team pursuit gold as the team of Momoka Horikawa, Ayano Sato and Takagi beat Canada by 1.22 seconds.
The Netherlands completed the podium as they raced against Canada, with the Dutch team finishing over two seconds behind the Canadians.
Olympic champions Norway surged to men's team pursuit gold, recovering from a slow start to come home in 3:40.83 seconds.
The team of Sander Eitrem, Peder Kongshaug and Sverre Lunde Pedersen finished 1.95 seconds ahead of Italy in second, with the United States rounding out the podium.
The action concludes on Sunday with the women's 3000m, men's 5000m and the mixed gender relay.
