Anders Thomsen has confirmed he will require surgery on his hand after his heavy crash in the Speedway Grand Prix of Latvia. The Dane came together with Jason Doyle in the second heat in Riga and was sent straight into the trackside barrier before flipping over the air fence and landing awkwardly. The Australian posted a video on social media explaining the extent of his injury.

Doyle wins after amazing fight with Thomsen

Anders Thomsen will undergo hand surgery following his crash in round seven of the 2023 FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series in Riga.
After a poor start in heat two of the Speedway GP of Latvia, the Dane collided with Jason Doyle after going for a move up the inside.
Doyle quickly shut the door and the resultant contact straightened up Thomsen’s bike, unseating him after a heavy collision with the trackside barrier.
Thomsen was later sent to hospital for checks on his injuries and has now confirmed in a video he posted on social media that he will need to have an operation on his hand.
The 29-year-old admitted it was “a little bit complicated” but paid tribute to the positive messages he has received since the incident.
“Hey everybody, I just want to say thank you for your messages of support,” Thomsen said.
“That’s a really great thing for me. Now I am waiting for surgery for my hand. It’s a little bit complicated so we are waiting for a really good doctor. Hopefully everything will be good.
“Again, huge thanks to all the fans and all the support I’ve had from Stal Gorzow. It’s really great for me. Thanks to my family and manager.”
It’s the latest setback in the double Danish champion’s career. Thomsen’s 2022 season was cut short when he broke his leg in the FIM GP Challenge of Glasgow, which ruled him out of the final four rounds.
He was yet to register a win in 2023 and now faces a race against time to be fit for round eight of the Speedway GP Series in Cardiff on September 2.
Championship leader Bartosz Zmarzlik fired to his fourth win of the season in Latvia.
