Tom Sykes swiped pole position from Kawasaki team-mate Jonathan Rea for World Superbikes race one at Laguna Seca.
Rea set the early pace in Superpole 2 only to be hauled in at the last by Sykes, forced to watch as his team-mate nipped ahead to take the number one spot on the grid.
Sykes has become just the second rider after Troy Corser to start from pole more than once at the challenging California venue.
With Rea and Sykes sat first and second in the overall standings, the grid placings teed up an enthralling drag away from the line.
Ducati's Davide Guigliano claimed third place, with his team-mate Chaz Davies heading the second row in fourth.
