Michael Phelps rightly dominated the night with his 20th and 21st gold medals, cementing his status as the greatest Olympian of all time, but Britain enjoyed a wonderful night too.
O'Connor was the first to win silver in the 200m individual medley and her success was swiftly followed by the men's team in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
The 20-year-old swam a British record 2:06.88 and nearly caused a huge surprise as she finished 0.3 seconds behind Hungarian world champion Katinka Hosszu, who set an Olympic record.
Having taken bronze in the same event at last year's World Championships, it was a tremendous achievement from O'Connor to go one better in Rio.
Britain's relay team were never going to trouble the USA line-up which featured Phelps, but they did come to Rio as world champions and were expected to challenge for a medal.
Indeed, they succeeded in doing so as Stephen Milne, Scott Duncan, Dan Wallace and James Guy finished only behind the dominant USA team.
Guy, who was left bitterly disappointed with his individual performances, managed to pip Japan's Takeshi Matsuda on the final leg to secure second by 0.37secs.
