Jan-Lennard Struff caused an upset with a straight-sets win over fourth seed Casper Ruud at the Monte Carlo Masters to reach the quarter-finals. Novak Djokovic is in action on Thursday afternoon, while Daniil Medvedev faces Alexander Zverev for a spot in the last eight.

Highlights: Rune eases past Thiem to reach last 16 at Monte Carlo

World No. 4 Casper Ruud was the victim of an upset in a 1-6 6-7(8) straight-sets defeat to Jan-Lennard Struff in the Monte Carlo Masters round of 16.
The German, ranked No. 100 in the ATP rankings, breezed through the first set before overcoming Ruud in a tighter second set to reach only his second-ever ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final, registering his first top 10 win since June 2021.
Ruud arrived in Monte Carlo fresh off the back of a title win at the Estoril Open last week, but struggled in southern France’s windy conditions, and he leaves Monte Carlo with a 10-7 record for the season.
Struff will play fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals following the Russian’s 7-6(4) 6-2 victory over Karen Khachanov.
Elsewhere, Jannik Sinner saved a match point to beat Hubert Hurkacz in a fiery top-10 battle.
Sinner trailed Hurkacz by a set and a break at 3-6 1-2, and came back from the brink of defeat when trailing 5-6 in the second set tie-break.
Once he battled back from match point, Sinner rallied to a second-set triumph to level the match, before snatching the decider to advance to the last eight.
“It was a very tough match,” said Sinner after the match. “Playing against him, I knew already from the beginning that it was very tough to get into the rhythm.
“I think he served incredible in the first one-and-a-half sets, and when I broke him the first time the momentum changed a little bit.
“He also had match point. These kinds of matches can go both ways, I’m happy that it went my way, and happy that I can play at least one more match.”
The Italian will play either Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Musetti in the next round.
Two-time Monte Carlo Masters champion Stefanos Tsitsipas made easy work of eliminating Nicolas Jarry as he triumphed 6-3 6-4.
The Greek star will be looking to extend his 12-match unbeaten run in Monte Carlo when he plays either Taylor Fritz or Jiri Lehecka in Thursday’s quarter-final.
Djokovic will seek a spot in the last eight when he plays Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday afternoon, while Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev also lock horns.
