Jannik Sinner withdraws from Paris Masters after 3am finish - “I have to take the right decision for my health'

After defeating Mackenzie McDonald at 3am on Thursday morning at the Paris Masters, Jannik Sinner was scheduled to play against Alex de MInaur at 4pm later that day. But the Italian has withdrawn from the competition, stating that he needs to prioritise his wellbeing ahead of the ATP Finals later this month. Tournament organisers have subsequently received criticism for the scheduling.

Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Masters, saying that he needs to prioritise his health and wellbeing after finishing his second-round match against Mackenzie McDonald at 2:37am on Thursday morning.
Questions have been asked about the scheduling of the tournament, with Casper Ruud slamming the decision to schedule Sinner’s last-16 clash with Alex de Minaur for 4pm on Thursday, less than 14 hours after his 6-7 7-5 6-1 victory against McDonald.
The match did not start until 11:30pm on Wednesday, with the Italian saying he made the decision to pull out of the ATP 1000 event because he wanted to ensure he was fit and ready to compete at the upcoming ATP Finals and the Davis Cup Finals.
“I’m sorry to announce that I’m pulling out of the match today in Bercy,” the world No. 4 wrote on X (formerly Twitter), a little under 90 minutes before he was due on court.

“I finished the match [against McDonald] when it was almost 3am and didn’t get to bed until a few hours later. I had less than 12 hours to rest and prepare for the next match.
“I have to take the right decision for my health and my body.
“The weeks coming up are very important, with the ATP Finals at home and the Davis Cup, so now I will focus on preparing for these important events.
“See you in Turin! Come on!”
The ATP Tour also confirmed his withdrawal, stating: “Next stop: Turin. Following his late finish in his win against McDonald last night, Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Rolex Paris Masters.”
Ruud hit out at the ATP Tour for the scheduling decision at the tournament after he was knocked out in the second round following a straight-sets defeat to Francisco Cerundolo.
The Norwegian wrote on X: “Bravo ATP Tour way to help one of the best players in the world recover and be as ready as possible when he finished his previous match at 2:37 am this morning.
“14.5 hours to recover… what a joke.”
It has been a busy week for Sinner after he beat Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Vienna Open, to clinch his fourth ATP Tour title this season.
Sinner has enjoyed a successful season so far, winning in Montpellier, claiming the ATP Masters 1000 in Canada before winning the China Open and the Vienna Open.
His next appearance on court will come at the ATP Finals in Italy later in the month, when he will be looking to claim his first victory at the tournament in Turin.
