Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from next week's Italian Open due to an arm injury.
The two-time Grand Slam champion missed clay-court events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona earlier this spring due to a right arm injury.
The world No. 3 played in this week’s Madrid Open wearing a protective sleeve on his arm, but he seems to have aggravated the injury in his home tournament.
Alcaraz, who lost to Andrey Rublev in three sets in the Madrid quarter-finals, says he will not be able to play in the Masters 1000 tournament in Italy which gets underway on May 10.
“I felt pain after playing in Madrid," the 20-year-old wrote in a post on X.
“Discomfort in my arm. Today I had some tests and I have muscle edema in the pronator teres, a consequence of my last injury.
“Unfortunately I won't be able to play in Rome. I need rest to recover and be able to play 100% pain-free.”
Alcaraz will be looking to be fit in time for Roland-Garros which begins on May 26.
Alcaraz's compatriot Rafael Nadal and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic are set to play in Rome.
It will be the first clay tournament that the two tennis greats have contested since the 2022 French Open, when Nadal beat Djokovic on his way to a 14th title.
Djokovic missed the Madrid Open and has only played one clay tournament in Monte Carlo, where he made the semis.
Jannik Sinner pulled out of his Madrid quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime due to a hip issue.
After a stunning start to the year, the Italian could have a chance to get to world No. 1 in Rome if he is able to play.
