Andy Murray fought back from losing the first set on a tie-breaker to force a decider against Kei Nishikori.
An 85-minute first set went with serve and the pair had to be separated by a tie-break, with Nishikori prevailing 11-9.
However, Murray rallied to break world number five Nishikori in the very first game of the next set before opening up a 3-1 advantage. Yet, the world number one surrendered his advantage in the eighth game of the set.
Nishikori had the momentum and looked the more likely from there but Murray drew on all his reserves to break back before serving out the second set.
