Vandeweghe produced a majestic performance that included 31 winners as she blew away 2016 French Open champion Muguruza.
The 25-year-old dominated the first set but passed up six break opportunities before Muguruza double faulted in the seventh to hand the American the decisive break.
A flummoxed Muguruza had no answers to Vandeweghe’s explosive power and suffered the ignominy of a second set bagel as the unseeded sealed progression in one hour and 23 minutes.
"I really wasn't feeling that great out there funnily enough. I was actually quite nervous," Vandeweghe said.
"I just tried to play my best, stay within myself and keep my patterns.
"She fought through a few break points but I kept up the pressure and she finally cracked.
"Then once I got rolling in the second it was like a freight train and (she) couldn't stop it."

Vandeweghe blasts her way past Muguruza

"I have zero regrets about my performance. I think when you play with someone that has the power to disturb like this, to hit these kind of shots, and has a good day, I mean, it's difficult honestly," Muguruza said in the wake of the defeat.
Vandeweghe's previous best at a Grand Slam came at Wimbledon in 2015, where she made the quarters.
