MATCH OF THE DAY

Serena Williams defends her title in her first match since that monumental shock at the US Open when a calendar Grand Slam slipped through her fingers. Her preparations have been somewhat troubled, and world number 35 Camila Giorgi is a tricky proposition, but Serena is the ultimate competitor and her sheer weight of talent should see her through to the second round.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE DAY

Home hopes are high for tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios and he is the headline act on Hisense Arena, closing the show. The number 29 seed has all the talent in the world but his temperament is questionable, to say the least, and Spaniard Pablo Cerreno Busta, ranked 67, could ask a few questions having taken a set off Rafael Nadal in Qatar earlier in January. If things start going downhill for Kyrgios, he could be in trouble.

The opening match on Court 10 sees British number two Kyle Edmund take on Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia Herzegovina. Edmund is on a high after the Davis Cup triumph which he played a minor part in. The final match on Court 8 sees Heather Watson, world number 53, take on Hungary's Timea Babos, who beat her in three sets in Cinncinati last year.
