Stan Wawrinka, Angelique Kerber safely through, but 11th seed Timea Bacsinszky goes out

4-Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland) beat Radek Stepanek (Czech Republic) 6-2 6-3 6-4 - Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka came safely through to the third round with a victory over Czech veteran Radek Stepanek. Stepanek, a former world number eight who is still playing on tour at the age of 37, was overwhelmed in the opening two sets, picking up just five games.

But he fought harder in the third set, breaking back to get on terms at 3-3... only for Wawrinka to break back immediately and then serve out the match.

The 2014 Australian Open champion was not at his best in his victory, and wobbled again as he was forced to save two break points while serving out in the final game.

But he is once again into the third round and will be confident of stepping up his form over the next 10 days.

7-Angelique Kerber (Germany) beat Alexandra Dulgheru (Romania) 6-2 6-4 - German seventh seed Angelique Kerber progressed to the third round after beating Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru 6-2 6-4. She will face 25-year-old American Madison Brengle.

21-Ekaterina Makarova (Russia) beat Tatjana Maria (Germany) 6-4 6-2 - Last year's Australian Open semi-finalist and 21st seed Ekaterina Makarova of Russia made easy work of Tatjana Maria, beating the German 6-4 6-2 to qualify for the third round.

Men's 30th seed Jeremy Chardy lost 6-4 7-6(5) 7-6(5) to Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia, while women's 11th seed Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland lost 6-2 6-3 to Annika Beck of Germany.
