Yulia Putintseva held off a determined Heather Watson to reach the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne, winning 7-5 7-5(7-6)
Putintseva took the first set 7-5 in 56 minutes, but required treatment for an eye problem during the break between sets.
In the second set, Watson broke her opponent early on and raced into a 4-1 lead as it appeared she was struggling with her sight.
The Kazakhstan player broke her way back to 4-4, and rallied into a lead of 6-5 before Watson broke back to take it to a tie break. Watson passed up chances to take the set before Putintseva held on to win.
