WEDNESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS

  • 4-Naomi Osaka (Japan) v 6-Elina Svitolina (Ukraine)
  • 16-Serena Williams (U.S.) v 7-Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic)
  • 1-Novak Djokovic (Serbia) v 8-Kei Nishikori (Japan)

MATCH OF THE DAY

16-Serena Williams (U.S.) v 7-Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic)
Williams has dropped just nine games as she has blasted her way through to the quarter-finals in Melbourne on her quest for a first major since becoming a mother. But seventh seed Pliskova has revenge on her mind. The Czech isn't about to be intimidated by the fancied American and will take heart from the resistance shown in the second set by Simona Halep in the last 16.
Williams remains the overwhelming favourite despite the seeding to stay on course for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam, but having lost to her in the US Open quarter-finals last September, Pliskova will be looking to repeat her success in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows in 2016. Expect another three-setter.

POTENTIAL UPSET OF THE DAY

1-Novak Djokovic (Serbia) v 8-Kei Nishikori (Japan)
Six-time Melbourne champion Djokovic will look to extend his excellent record against Nishikori when the pair meet on Wednesday, with the Serbian having won 15 of their previous 17 encounters. Indeed, since winning two of their opening three head-to-heads, Djokovic has won 14 on the spin. Despite Nishikori's eighth seed, this would represent a big shock.
Djokovic joked on court after his four-set victory over Daniil Medvedev that he had hoped Nishikori was defeated by Pablo Carreño Busta in the fourth-round tie that was taking place at the same time. The world number one is yet to find his best tennis over the past fortnight, but both come into this contest off the back of similarly draining matches. Djokovic suffered an awkward fall during his victory over Medvedev, so Nishikori will look to wear him down and show the same resilience that saw him come back from two sets down to beat Carreño Busta.

BRIT WATCH

Jamie Murray is back in action following his much-publicised spat with Dan Evans on the state of men's doubles tennis as he looks to reach the semi-finals with his partner Bruno Soares. The number three seeds take on Henri Kontinen of Finland and Australia's John Peers for the right to face Leonardo Mayer and Joao Sousa. Murray and Soares overcame the same pair in three sets last November during the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
