Alexander Zverev produced a consummate performance against the ATP’s in-form player Andrey Rublev, beating the Russian 6-4 6-4 6-4 to progress to the quarter-final stage of the Australian Open.
In an efficient performance, the 22-year-old broke the Russian’s serve once in each set to progress a to a first-ever quarter-final at Melbourne Park.
Zverev arrived in Melbourne lacking confidence after losing all three of his singles matches at the inaugural ATP Cup to Australia's Alex de Minaur, Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and Canada's Denis Shapovalov, but can now look forward to a first-ever quarter-final appearance at Melbourne Park.
"It feels amazing," said Zverev.
I played some great matches against some great opponents. This is Andrey's first loss of the season. He's won two tournaments already, made to the fourth round here, playing unbelievable tennis.
"I'm just happy to be playing how I'm playing. Because after ATP Cup I wasn't sure I am going to be winning any matches here to be honest. But it's all going well and hope I can continue."
Rublev extended his winning streak to 11-0 with a third-round win over 11th seed David Goffin on Saturday, but Zverev progressed to a last-eight showdown with Stan Wawrinka having yet to lose a set at the year’s first Grand Slam.
