Daniil Medvedev was left to shrug and smile while Hubert Hurkacz basked in a huge ovation from the Rod Laver Arena fans as the Pole edged a quite spectacular point in the thrilling fifth set of their quarter-final clash at the Australian Open. Hurkacz somehow retrieved what looked to be a winning drop shot from his opponent with a lob, followed by a drop shot of his own to win a wild point.

'Absolutely incredible!' - Hurkacz wins unbelievable point against Medvedev

There was a quite incredible point between Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz at the Australian Open on Wednesday that left both players soaking up the applause.
The match certainly delivered in general with five hugely entertaining sets as Medvedev eventually came out the victor, 7-6(4) 2-6 6-3 5-7 6-4, to progress through to the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.
The No. 3 seed was leading with the advantage on his serve at 4-3 up with a break in the bag when the memorable point occurred at what was a crucial moment in the course of the match.
Medvedev looked certain to have won the point as he pulled off a sublime drop shot, but somehow his opponent managed to sprint to the net and, at full stretch on the slide, retrieve it to continue the rally.
Not only did Hurkacz get the ball back in the court, but he did so via an exquisite lob that turned the tables on Medvedev and led to him putting away a subsequent volley at the net.
It was a stupendous point all round, and Eurosport commentators Chris Bradnam and Miles Maclagan certainly enjoyed it - as did the fans.
"No way!" Bradnam yelled in shock on commentary. "We've seen it all now."
Maclagan added: "Talk about skill, talk about athleticism and touch, we've seen it all now! Absolutely incredible!
"This one too, when you've done all that hard work, you don't want to miss that one. Boy, he plays a beauty!"
The world No. 3 Medvedev is a two-time finalist at Melbourne Park, having made the showpiece event in 2021 and 2022, and he will next take on either Alexander Zverev or No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals.
