Despite losing a lacklustre final to Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer, Marat Safin made his intentions for 2004 perfectly clear: to capture the number one spot in the men's game. The Russian told us that his performance over the last two weeks showed that
"I simply ran out of gas, maybe if I'd played a little less this week I'd have won" he told Eurosport. "I must see the positive side, two weeks ago no-one thought I'd be in the final" he added.
The 2002 finalist played a remarkable twenty-seven sets on his way to the final, clocking up some nineteen hours on court. In his wake he left 2003 champion Andre Agassi and US Open winner Andy Roddick.
GUNNING FOR NUMBER ONE
The 2000 US Open titleholder threw down the gauntlet saying that although the Australian Open was lost, the year was young and his chances of becoming world number one still real.
"I still have a chance of becoming number one"
"There are still three grand slam tournaments" he continued "It's not all about one or two tournaments, it's about being consistent throughout the year".
Summing up he suggested that "if I can be more consistent, maybe I can finish number one".
