Guido Pella followed up Juan Martin del Potro’s opening rubber heroics with a 6-7 6-4 6-3 6-2 win over Kyle Edmund to give Argentina a two-match lead over Great Britain.
Edmund had been made to wait for his second rubber with world No. 49 Pella, thanks to Andy Murray and Del Potro’s five-set epic running for over five hours.
But the Brit – ranked six places below is opponent in the ATP standings – came charging out of the box, with his powerful forehand in fine working order during an impressive first set showing.
However, Pella is a tricky player and gradually wore his young opponent down, making short work of the fourth and final set to leave the home fans with little to cheer as they left the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.
Britain will now need victory in Saturday’s doubles to force a final day, with both singles victories needed to go the home side’s way to deny Argentina a place in the Davis Cup final.
"I am happy to give the team a second point after Juan Martin's amazing match," Pella said afterwards.
"I was fighting every point no matter what."
