The Argentine confirmed on his Twitter feed that he would travel on Thursday, his 22nd birthday, to the tournament in Bangkok.
"I'm happy to be able to tell you: I'm going to play again!" del Potro wrote. "It will be at the Bangkok tournament next Monday."
The right-hander last played at the Australian Open in January and was not fit enough to defend his US Open crown, the Argentine's first Grand Slam success, this month.
Having failed to recover from an injury to his right wrist, del Potro opted for surgery in May. He began hitting tennis balls again early last month.
Del Potro, whose ranking has dropped to 35th from a career high fourth, has seven singles titles.
His coach Franco Davin was keen for Del Potro to get some action prior to the Shanghai Masters starting on October 10. He is also down for the Japan Open starting on October 4.
The top seed at Bangkok is world number one Rafael Nadal who succeeded Del Potro as US Open champion nine days ago.
