Djokovic, who is undefeated in 26 matches in China, had too much class for up-and-coming Austrian Thiem, winning 76 percent of his service points and saving both break points he faced.
One break of serve was enough to secure top seed Djokovic the first set in just over forty minutes and he broke early in the next before serving it out to progress in just under an hour and a half.
The world number one will face Mikhail Kukushkin in the next round.
