The fourth singles match in a Fed Cup tie will be scrapped if a team has an unassailable 3-0 lead.
International Tennis Federation executive vice president Juan Margets said that the rule change "came in response to requests from players, captains and national associations".
The doubles will be played instead - but should the fourth singles decide the outcome, the doubles will still be played.
A first-to-10 tie-break decider would then replace the third set, apart from in the final, when the doubles would be scrapped.
