Kei Nishikori was a 6-1 7-5 6-3 winner in the first round over Simone Bolelli in a match that ran over two days in Paris due to rain.
Japan's fifth seed hit 30 winners to complete a 50th win at a Grand Slam event in a match that started out on Sunday.
He remains on course to beat his best showing at the French Open, a quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros two years ago and will hope to emulate the level of form that forced Novak Djokovic to three hours before losing an epic semi-final over three sets in the Rome Masters semi-finals.
Nishikori has won two titles on the clay of Barcelona and faces world number 40 Andrey Kuznetsov in the second round.
Kuznetsov enjoyed a 6-2 6-2 6-4 victory against Benjamin Becker on Sunday.
Nishikori was forced to retire from his previous meeting with Kuznetsov on the grass of Eastbourne six years ago.
