Former world number one Serena Williams returns to Grand Slam action for the first time in over 15 months, when she goes up against Czech Kristyna Pliskova in the French Open first round on Tuesday. Williams, 36, has not played a major tournament since winning a 23rd title at the 2017 Australian Open, having given birth to her daughter Alexis in September. World number one Simona Halep, chasing a maiden grand slam crown, will start her campaign against American Alison Riske.

Novak Djokovic continues to struggle for fitness after a long time away from the game at his physical peak. With Nadal showing him there is a way back, and as Roger Federer proving you can be world-class well into your thirties, there are examples for him to follow, but Dutra Silva could provide another reminder he is not there yet.

World number 16 Kyle Edmund takes on Australian Alex De Minaur for a spot in round two. Kyle Edmund will not be weighed down by the burden of expectation at this year’s French Open. The 23-year-old has been carrying British men’s grand slam hopes for the best part of a year in the absence of the injured Andy Murray. Edmund also finds himself seeded for the first time at a major tournament, while still basking in the glory of his thrilling run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year.
