Watson, the British No.2, started slowly against France's Oceane Dodin but turned the tide thereafter and finished off with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
She had to battle through a downpour in the final game to claim victory and set up a clash with either Elise Martens of Belgium – the 16th seed here in Paris – or USA's Varvara Lepchenko.
And while Watson has struggled for form in 2018 – this was only her second win of the year – her confidence remains undimmed.
"I started a little nervous, but I was feeling very confident coming in and I knew that, so once I got those nerves out of me in the first couple of games I loosened up and started playing how I have been practicing," said Watson – who has never made the French Open third round.
"That last game was tough to close out, you could feel the rain coming and it's tough because you don't want to rush but you kind of do and I was getting water in my eyes when I served!
"But I'm pleased with the way I closed it out and just really happy with my level throughout the whole match.
"Despite my season I was feeling so confident coming into this match, just the way I have prepared, trained, eaten, slept, everything to the best of my ability and that's why I'm feeling so confident regardless of my results in the past."
