Top seed Rafa Nadal saved four set points to beat Simone Bolelli 6-4 6-3 7-6(9) in the first round of the French Open at Roland Garros.
Nadal was two sets up but 3-0 down in the third as the pair resumed on Tuesday afternoon after their first-round match was delayed due to rain.
But the Spaniard, seeking his 11th French Open title, fought his way back into the set to force a tie-break.
"It was difficult today to play so aggressive, being in the first round and against a player who really came on court and decided to play that strong," Nadal told reporters.
Bolelli, a lucky loser, was in imperious form as he carved out four set points with some stunning play around the court - including some delicate drop shots.
But Nadal brought out the big guns right when it mattered and goes through to face Guido Pella.
Even in defeat, Bolelli said he would be leaving Paris happy.
"It gives me a lot of confidence, I played a really good tennis," the Italian told a post-match news conference. "I think maybe I deserved the third set. But Rafa is like this, you have to go after every point, pushing and pushing."
