Britain's Brydan Klein has suffered a 6-2 6-2 defeat to Germany's Max Marterer in the first round of qualifying for the French Open.
The Australian-born Klein, the world number 175, was the only British man in qualifying for the season's second major which begins at Roland Garros on Sunday.
Klein, 27, could not convert any of the three break points that came his way with Marterer winning four of five to break twice in each set.
Qualifiers need to win three matches to reach the first round proper on clay with the qualifiers played over three sets rather than the five which comes into effect when the tournament proper begins.
