Andy Murray moved into the quarter-finals with a hugely assertive win against Dimitrov, who shocked the Brit in their last-eight tie at Wimbledon last year, and will now play Aussie hopeful Nick Kyrgios.
The thing which impressed me was the way Murray kept his nerve in the first set when Dimitrov won the opening three games. It was magnificent; he stayed calm and weathered the storm. The only blip for the Scot was the second set. He will look back on that and know that he should have won it, and that would have made life a lot easier. But he needed to be tested in this tournament and he found a way through, so, for me, it’s a massive positive, and you can see the reaction from his team who were absolutely delighted.
Dimitrov was moving exceptionally well and that showed in the first three games which were incredible. He could have been facing anyone and he still would have been up 3-0. But Murray stayed calm, found a way to win the set, and that was down to his experience which was the difference in the match.
He had a lapse in the second set and Grigor took advantage of that. If he can consistently play at this level, in a year’s time he will be ready to play the likes of the Murray, Nadal, Federer, Djokovic. He is the future of men’s tennis.
But Murray was mentally exceptional, especially the way he turned it around in that fourth set, rather than having to go the distance in a decider. In terms of areas Myrrat needs to improve, I think he needs to be more aggressive with his second serve, I think it’s a little short and predictable at times. I expect him to defeat Kyrgios in four sets, but the one I’m worried about is Nadal in the semis. Rafa was fantastic - particularly in the last two sets against Kevin Anderson.

Andy is the slightly more mature player and that again showed on court, though I was more impressed with the Bulgarian this time around. I have to say that I’ve always thought that Grigor in the past has been a little too much icing and not enough cake, but he really came of age in this match, he really impressed me. Even though he lost, the next time he plays Andy he’ll have a much better idea of how to play him and he could beat him.
I thought there were only a couple of lapses on both sides. It was an absolutely spectacular game of tennis, and the right person won because he’s the better player. There’s a slight age gap between them which is always going to show as it’s always tough to break through against a more mature player and Grigor is going to have to do an awful lot to overcome that. Andy is the fitter player, he mixed it up well, he served well, I thought it was an absolutely exemplary display.
Dimitrov definitely had a little fatigue at the end of the third set and then Murray looked a little weary but that’s what happens. Then you get a second wind, and I actually think that incident where he got mad with the umpire fired him up a bit and made a big difference, because he was beginning to look a little tired, and sometimes all you need is a little spark like that to reignite your determination.
