Johanna Konta run halted by Venus Williams in China

Johanna Konta fell agonisingly short as Venus Williams outlasted her to clinch a 6-4 3-6 7-5 victory in the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open.
Konta came into the clash against her childhood idol boasting an impressive 21 wins from 22 matches, and looked on course for another when she served for the match at 5-3 in the decider.
But Williams dug deep to reel off four straight games – the last featuring three pulsating rallies – and set up a last-four date with Roberta Vinci, the Italian who ended sister Serena’s hopes of the calendar Slam at the US Open.
"Johanna played so well. She has had a wonderful summer," said Williams.
"It seemed like I was finished but I felt the energy from the crowd."
Konta’s stunning form will see her overtake Heather Watson as British number one when the rankings are updated.
She could quite feasibly be a top 20 player when summer rolls around again, given the dearth of points she has to defend between now and the grass court season.
"I gave my all today. It just wasn't enough. I lost to a pretty incredible champion. It was a privilege to share the court with her," said Konta.
