Magdalena Rybarikova knocks Karolina Pliskova out of Nature Valley Classic

Third seed Karolina Pliskova suffered a repeat of her Wimbledon loss to Magdalena Rybarikova in the opening round of the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham.

Rybarikova stunned Pliskova, one of the favourites for the title, in the second round at the All England Club last summer and had little trouble matching that, the Slovakian winning 6-2 6-3 in just 63 minutes.

France’s Kristina Mladenovic came from a set down to beat Katerina Siniakova 1-6 6-2 6-4 while there were also victories for Naomi Osaka and Daria Gavrilova.

It was a bad day for the seeds at the Mallorca Open, where Anett Kontaveit, Carla Suarez Navarro and Aryna Sabalenka all lost.

Tatjana Maria came from a set down to stun fourth seed Kontaveit 3-6 6-4 6-3  for just her third WTA Tour win of the year while fifth seed Suarez Navarro was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7/4) by her fellow Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena and eighth seed Sabalenka lost 3-6 6-4 6-2 to Alison van Uytvanck.
