The British number one, seeded 24th and thus given a bye through the first round, won 6-4 6-2 on Court 1 in Key Biscayne.
She will next face qualifier Elena Vesnina, who beat 10th seed Venus Williams in three sets on the Stadium court. Williams saved a match point during the second-set tie-break but Vesnina came through 6-0 6-7 (5/7) 6-2.
"It was much closer than the second set score showed," said Konta after her match. "We had a lot of deuce games, a lot of back and forth.
"She's been pushing some of the best players in the world to quite the limit in the last couple of weeks, so I was really happy how I was able to compete against her."
Meanwhile, Kyle Edmund gave a display of his quality but could not stave off a straight-sets loss to world number one Novak Djokovic.
The Beverley-based 21-year-old lost 6-3 6-3 on the Stadium court in round two with Djokovic warmly congratulating Edmund at the net at the end of a display from the world number 87 which will have earned him plenty of new admirers.
"I felt like I did put my game out there and tried to play some aggressive tennis," said Edmund.
"At points it worked, it shows I can be aggressive, but at times I need to find the balance."
