Andy Murray battled past Jerzy Janowicz 7-5 6-2 to advance into the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
The first set went with serve until the final game of the set when Murray secured a decisive break to take the first stanza in just under 50 minutes.
Murray, who battled past Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-1 7-5 in the last round, had to fend off two break points early in the second set before securing a break in the fourth game to open up a 3-1 advantage and he saw the match out from there.
The Briton, ninth in the rankings as he seeks to break into the elite top eight who will play in the season-ending ATP Finals in London in November, will face David Ferrer in round three.
The fifth seeded Spaniard found the going difficult against his Slovak opponent Martin Klizan before grinding out a 4-6 7-6(4) 6-4 victory as he looks to climb up from his current 10th position in the race for the Tour Finals.
