The 20-year-old was picked up by on-court microphones making a lewd jibe at Wawrinka about the Swiss player’s apparent girlfriend.
Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend. Sorry to tell you that, mate.
Kyrgios' remark, in reference to his Davis Cup team-mate Thanasi Kokkinakis, was picked up by on-court microphones and TV cameras.
The Aussie took to Facebook on Thursday to apologise for his actions which he branded "unacceptable on many levels."
The ATP had earlier said in a statement: "The ATP has announced that Nick Kyrgios has been fined for an insulting remark made to Stanislas Wawrinka during his second round match against Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup in Canada."
Details of the fine were not initially disclosed.

Wawrinka expressed his outrage on Twitter shortly after the match and called for his opponent to be punished.
Kyrgios had previously claimed he was provoked into making the comment.
"He was getting a bit lippy with me," he said afterwards. "Kind of in the heat of the moment, I don't know, I just said it."
Kyrgios progressed into the third round after Wawrinka withdrew citing injury while trailing in the third set.
