The 2020 champion’s title defence continues as she comes through a tricky encounter against another rising starlet to set up a last eight showdown with No.17 seed from Greece, Maria Sakkari. Swiatek hit back from 0-30 to claim it on a second match point with an improvised backhand volley lob.

Lifeline? Kostyuk bounces her racket in frustration after coughing up a match point with an avoidable miss. She responds brilliantly and then benefits from a surprising miss from Swiatek to pose the serve-out question.

No screams this time, just a faint smile and hands on hips from Kostyuk. She has her chances to break back but can’t convert. Swiatek finds the first serve and screams ‘Come on! ‘ as clutch play moves her within sight of the finish line.

It’s quiet fist pumps juxtaposed by a scream of sorrow. Iga breaks at the second time of asking when Marta slices into the net after a wonderful lob had set up another opportunity for the Pole.

Swiatek responds with a strong hold of her own but it’s edgy and tight once again out there.

Marta has the trainer on and appears to take a pill for whatever the complaint is. It seems to make an immediate impact on her game as she returns brilliantly despite Iga finding some rapid first serves. The Ukrainian breaks right back. Not many saw that coming given how tired and irritated she was looking a few moments ago.

Has her frustration and the fatigue of the battle finally got to Kostyuk? She chokes up a break to love with an untimely double fault. The Polish No8 seed is on the charge.

That’s a thumping hold to love. The Swiatek forehand finds some rhythm and the drive volley isn’t too shabby either. Both on the board early doors in Set 2.

There’s a squeal of horror as she misses what can only be described as a sitter but Marta battles on and lures another error out of Swiatek’s usually trusty forehand on her way to a plucky hold.

The reigning champion continues her Nadal-esque run of sets won in Paris as she serves out a tight opener on her third set point in 48 minutes. Kostyuk more than played her part but couldn’t push on with an early wing of momentum her way.

BREAK! – SWIATEK 5-3 KOSTYUK

There’s the breakthrough. Some testing angle on a couple of backhands lure the error on an attempt down the line from Marta and Swiatek seizes the moment. She will now serve for a far from straight-forward set. It’s been hugely competitive.

SWIATEK 4-3 KOSTYUK

That is top class from the world number 81 but she fades at the wrong time in the game and Iga wriggles out of danger. The 18-year-old shows real speed and tremendous hands to pick up Swiatek’s drop shot and angle a beauty of a winner back across court. It tees up double break point but she blows a big chance on the second one when she fizzes a forehand long. Iga stays solid from deuce and stays on course.

SWIATEK 3-3 KOSTYUK

It feels like every time she wins a point Marta needs to scream a ‘come on!’ She bellows it on more than a couple of occasions here as another gruelling game goes her way from deuce. No sign of Swiatek running away with this one.

SWIATEK 3-2 KOSTYUK

This is a highly intriguing tussle. Both players are mixing some outrageous winners with poor decision-making and errors in high-octane rallies. It’s making for a tight, entertaining spectacle. This time Swiatek swats away break point and unloads a couple of sizzling backhands to the baseline to snatch back the scoreboard advantage.

BREAK! – SWIATEK 2-2 KOSTYUK

Iga taps on the door, then she batters away on it but Kostyuk is defiant in her superb defensive work and fends off four break points with some seriously clutch tennis. The Pole persists and finally makes the breakthrough as the Ukrainian lashes long. There was a contentious moment leading up to the fifth chance as Kostyuk played a shot despite thinking it would be called out. It wasn’t and she’s a tad unfortunate there.

BREAK! – SWIATEK 1-2 KOSTYUK

You wonder how much their knowledge of each other in their junior days is impacting on events so far. Swiatek doesn’t look as assured as she usually does. The defending champion drags a forehand well wide to cough up double break point and then cannons a backhand straight into the middle of the net to come unstuck after saving the first.

SWIATEK 1-1 KOSTYUK

Swiatek snatches at a return and slaps the forehand into the net. The Pole is a little frustrated as she threw in a poorly executed drop shot on break point and then had another wiped out as Kostyuk found her groove on the backhand. It looked tricky at times but must go down as a fine hold for the 18-year-old in the end.

SWIATEK 1-0 KOSTYUK

Confident and efficient. Not even a double fault can hamper Iga as she doesn’t give Marta much to take a swing at.

Today’s night session is almost upon us. We’ve got the reigning champion, Swiatek up against 18-year-old Marta Kostyuk. The Ukrainian is ranked at 81 in the world.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! - NADAL 7-5 6-3 6-0 SINNER

Nadal saves break point before serving out the match at the second attempt from deuce and helping himself to a third-set bagel. The Spaniard was unplayable at times but at other points he showed there are areas he’ll be keen to tighten up going forward, particularly with his serve. Sinner was the better player for a chunk of the first set but his form dipped as Nadal’s rose and he never truly looked like producing a major upset. The No.3 seed marches on after a two-hour and 17-minute tussle and will meet Diego Schwartzman in the last eight.

BREAK! – NADAL 7-5 6-3 5-0 SINNER

This is all over bar the shouting. Nadal has worn Sinner down and this time he doesn’t look like letting up. The teenager guesses right on Nadal’s attempt to clock up double break point and launches an astonishing crosscourt backhand pass. However, Jannik follows up with a terrible forehand wide with the point on his racket and then shows where his state of mind is at with a double fault. Nadal will now serve for the match.

Sublime. Nadal dances into position again and sizzles a crisp crosscourt backhand winner to back up the double break to love.

The error count continues to climb at an alarming rate for Sinner and that’s often the case when tiring under the incessant spin and relentless probing of Nadal. The Spaniard breaks again and is firmly in charge, but he’ll be mindful of what happened in the last set.

Supreme from Nadal. He steps on the after-burner at 30-15 down and scorches a crosscourt backhand winner. He paints his untouchable patterns before unloading a backhand up the line and concludes another break with a ridiculous winner right to the very corner of Sinner’s right corner.

How wrong can you be? Nadal hits the high notes again, nailing the forehand winners and serving it out to love. He’s two sets to the good but it’s been a real rollercoaster for both players so far.

Nadal goes on the attack and sets the early tone with a bullet backhand winner down the line. Sinner double faults to open the door and an improvised lob on the slide conjures up triple break point. Sinner saves one but then drags a loose backhand well wide. Nadal re-establishes the advantage but given his service wobbles this will not be routine.

BREAK! – NADAL 7-5 4-3 SINNER

Nadal is double faulting for fun out there and it’s giving Sinner an avenue back into this match. The Spaniard fires down his seventh at 30-0 and another efficient game turns sour. Nadal unloads a forehand long and it’s another break point for the No.18 seed. A huge serve saves it but Sinner has the bit between his teeth and lets out a roar when he claims a second bite of the cherry. A picks up a Nadal drop shot and rifles a crosscourt winner. From 4-0 down and a double break, he’s back on serve!

NADAL 7-5 4-2 SINNER

Jannik stays in contention with a hold to 30 and will feel he’s no longer on the wrong end of Nadal’s purple patch. Next up, it’s an important service game for Rafa.

Nadal bounces back down to human mode. Sinner finally remembers what it’s like to hit some winners and then chalks up a break point when he out drop shots the No.3 seed. Nadal loses focus and another double fault gifts the 19-year-old one of the breaks back.

My word, Nadal has motored through the gears and found an almost halcyon level from mid-way in that first set. He corks a ridiculous backhand down the line to break again. The scary thing is that he’s still some way off his clay-court best.

Make that seven in a row. Sinner slides from side to side, defending like crazy as Spain’s Raging Bull rockets off a succession of forehands. Yet another double fault offers the Italian a glimmer of hope but Nadal comes out on top in a pulsating rally to back up his break and continue the charge.

BREAK! – NADAL 7-5 2-0 SINNER

That is wonderful from Nadal. The forehand is penning Sinner back behind his baseline and he’s then moving in to clean up with volleys at the net. The Italian sees a 30-0 lead evaporate and is broken once again. That’s six games on the run for the King of Clay.

NADAL 7-5 1-0 SINNER

Nadal survives a mid-game crisis as a 40-0 cruise turns into a real tussle from deuce. The Mallorcan shows brilliant footwork to get into position to unload a crosscourt forehand and goes on to maintain his momentum.

What a turnaround! It’s 33 straight set at Roland Garros for Nadal as he finds his form at just the right time. A forehand down the line and a brilliant drop shot conjure up triple set point and he gets the job done on the second after some great defence results in Sinner hitting too heavy and fizzing long of the baseline. Nadal was second best for a lot of that set but once again found a way.

BREAK! – NADAL 5-5 SINNER

That’s a shocker. Sinner falls apart after a brilliant, deep return from Nadal forced an error in the opening point. The Spaniard raised the intensity but the 19-year-old missed some make-able shots there. He throws in a double fault to compound the miserable game as he’s broken to love. Nadal is back in it.

NADAL 4-5 SINNER

Rafa asks the serve-out question with an excellent wide second serve. He chalks up a hold to love but could be about to lose his long run at RG without dropping a set. Over to you, Jannik, how’s your nerve?

NADAL 3-5 SINNER

It’s an important juncture in the set and Sinner remains unfazed. Nadal can offer little resistance as the No.18 seed moves to within a game of taking the set.

NADAL 3-4 SINNER

That’s more like it from Nadal. He gets his forehand firing and yells out a trademark ‘Vamos!’ An ace will give him some confidence after a bit of a malfunction on serve since the opening game as he eases to a love hold.

NADAL 2-4 SINNER

It’s a sticky start from Sinner and he has to play catch up from 0-30. Nadal conjures up a break point by picking up a drop shot and passing down the line but a brutal forehand winner in reply sees Jannik make deuce. Rafa slaps a poor attempt at a forehand winner up the line and from there Sinner’s power gets him out of trouble. He consolidates and is by far the better player out there at the moment.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-3 SINNER

It’s three games in a row and two breaks of the Nadal serve. The Spaniard looks really shaky and Sinner knows it. Two double faults and missing a crosscourt forehand he usually makes in his sleep prove his undoing. Lots for the 13-time RG champion to ponder.

Nadal isn’t quite finding a clean contact or the length on the forehand and Sinner steps in to dictate and overpower the reigning champion. The 19-year-old somehow blows a sitter of a mid-court forehand at 40-15 and then survives to level as Nadal lashes just wide with an attempt down the line from way off court.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-1 SINNER

Rafa’s confident opening wobbles as his first serve goes AWOL. Sinner steps in with a bombardment of forehand power to apply some pressure. The Spaniard angles a superb backhand from a fizzing return to make 30-30 but double faults to cough up a break point. The No.3 seed finds a delicious crosscourt angle to lure an error and make deuce but a long forehand gives the Italian another opportunity and Nadal inexplicably nets a forehand with the point on his racket to allow his opponent to immediately break back.

BREAK! – NADAL 2-0 SINNER

Nadal looks in the zone and keen for an early break. The warm weather helps the forehand pop up on Sinner causing the Italian some clear troubles. A backhand into the net gives the Spaniard the BP and Jannik spoons way off court from another high-bouncing forehand attack.

That’s a superb opener. Nadal makes all four first serves, crunching down two aces on his way to a comprehensive love hold.

He decides he can’t keep going and it’s all over. Djokovic hits back from two sets down to keep his hopes of a 19th Grand Slam title alive. The world number one prevails in three hours and 27 minutes following the 19-year-old’s retirement. For two sets Musetti thrilled and provided a look into the future of tennis with some magical play. He faded badly and needed a medical time-out in the three one-sided sets that followed, but overall he’ll be pleased with his run at his first French Open. Djokovic moves on and will play Matteo Berrettini in the last eight.

The mini surge has gone. Musetti slams a ball out of court in frustration and gets a warning after coughing up double break point once more. He hooks a weak backhand wide and the Nole express surges on.

It is more of contest, but Djokovic has all of the answers. He backs up the break to 15 and has clocked up 11 games on the spin.

That could be that. Musetti just can’t get enough length to trouble Djokovic now. The Serb seems to have lots of time and strolls to the net to clock up double break point. Musetti hits bigger to try and resuscitate the game but flashes a blistering forehand just wide.

Lorenzo returns from a spell with the trainer and looks to be aggressive. Djoker slips after being wrong-footed but sticks an arm out to keep the ball alive and somehow goes on to win the point. The world number one needs treatment on a nasty graze near the knuckle. Play halted once again.

It is indeed a bagel and it’s two sets all in what feels like the blink of an eye. We are heading into a decider but there’s no sense of jeopardy on it at present. Everyone watching is expecting Djoker to ease through it. Can Musetti find something deep within to change things up?

Lorenzo is so flat. He finally chalks up a point and looks on course for the game, but Novak refuses to let him get on the board. The Serb unleashes some venomous returns to turn 40-15 around and punish the heavy-footed, tiring Italian with a couple of dropshots to break again. The bagel is on.

Double break consolidated. Still no point for Musetti in this set. The dream is turning into a nightmare for Lorenzo.

This set has all-but gone too. What a bizarre drop off from the teenager. He’s broken to love again. He’s not won a point in this set. A decider looks like being a formality – and the winner of that will be too unless the world number 76 can get his act together. He’s not just lacking shot strategy right now, he’s devoid of fight.

It’s becoming a procession. Musetti needs to flip the switch soon or he’s going to get swept aside. It’s becoming embarrassingly simple for the Serb.

It’s not a case of Djokovic being brilliant here. He’s solid. Musetti is just a million miles off what he was producing in the first two sets. He miscues wildly down both flanks and coughs up a woeful break to love.

It’s as straight-forward as a set is going to get really. Djokovic claims a breadstick with Musetti offering little resistance. He reduces the arrears and into a fourth we go. The world number one’s comeback is ON!

That’s the double break and this set is all-but over for Musetti. For all of Djoker’s improvement there’s no doubt the teenager has dipped.

Djokovic has definitely got the misfiring forehand back in sync and it’s making a significant difference. He’s not tested again as another game whistles by. This third set is lacking the magic of the first two and it’s very one-sided too.

Lorenzo stops the rot with a couple of clinical overheads and some big first serves. He holds to love to get on the board and stay in touch.

Too good. Djokovic is finding a cleaner contact and more power on the forehand. His serve clicks nicely too with a super volley to ensure he consolidates to 15 with little fuss. It’s looking like a very different match all of a sudden, but a response was to be expected.

You sense Musetti needed to dig in and earn the hold there. Djokovic gets exactly what he was hoping for with the fast start in Set 3. The Serb takes advantage of some poor shot choices from the Italian to make it three from three on break points so far today. Momentum shift? It looks like it.

Just what the doctor ordered. Djokovic disappeared off court for a while between sets and he comes back looking re-focused. He produces a brilliant stun volley on the stretch on route to a comfortable love hold. You still wouldn’t bet against the Serb here.

RESULT: Diego Schwartzman moves into the quarter finals after beating Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6 6-4 7-5. He will play Nadal or Sinner.

Wow, wow, WOW! Djoker flashes a return long and Musetti takes the breaker by a 7-2 scoreline to move two sets up on the Serb. The world number one is in real danger now.

It’s another tie break. Djokovic doesn’t give the youngster a chance with a pair of aces, great work at the net and a raking backhand to punish a poor drop shot.

The teenager continues to make waves! It’s all about a couple of ridiculous forehand winners. He thunders a blockbuster right down the line and then reaches for one deep in the corner and stuns Djokovic as he lashes it on to the line with a ridiculously short angle. He's guaranteed the minimum of a tie break but will hope to come out swinging as the top seed aims to stay in the set now.

It’s all about the errors as both players see their radars malfunction. Djoker’s finds its range the quicker and a clean overhead sees him level to 30.

A pair of forehand winners after catching Djokovic out in each rally see the Italian keep the board ticking over once more. It really is impressive work from the teen as he continues to find the answers, particularly when faced with tough situations like at 30-30 here. Regardless of what happens now, he's winning a lot more fans with his fearless tennis today.

That was some game from Musetti and he may well rue not breaking there. He amuses everyone watching with contrasting expressions to suggest an internal debate about failing to read Djoker’s drop shot. He shrugs it off and some wonderful improvisation at the net before big forehands and an overhead earn another BP. His brilliance ends there though as he loops a make-able forehand long and then fails to make any impression from deuce.

You’ve got to love the way Lorenzo bides his time constructing points. Slice, slice, attack with the forehand, slice… It’s perfect for clay-court tennis. It sees him lure an error on the run from Nole and earns him the hold to 30 as we head into the business end of the set.

That’s clutch serving from Novak. He comes under the cosh as Musetti notches up another break point by following up a sublime backhand down the line with a ferocious crosscourt forehand winner. The Serb responds to make deuce and finds the big serve a couple more times to level matters.

Nole needed that! He guesses brilliantly on two occasions on the opening point and his defence earns him the reward. Musetti suffers a real dip and Djoker stays solid. The Italian drops a forehand wide and it’s an immediate break back for the top man in the draw.

It’s an error-strewn service game from the world number one – and he pays the price. It’s very unlike the Serb. He blows an overhead way off court and then leaks errors for fun off both flanks to cough up the break. Musetti’s variety is causing him some real issues and he needs to start finding solutions.

That is clutch. Musetti battles back from 0-30 with four points on the spin to stay in front. The Italian somehow wins a real dance off at the net with a sensational angled pick-up and breaches the Serb’s defences with a scorching backhand down the line to finish.

Djokovic looks in a bit more trouble when he’s caught flat-footed by a rapid return. He’s faced with another poser at 15-30 but works hard to wrestle back control and avoids more potential probing at deuce when Musetti nets a drop shot in a rally he was in charge of.

The kid has all the answers right now. Djokovic doesn’t quite know what to do and it’s the Italian who is out-thinking the top seed at the moment. Lorenzo sizzles a couple of superb forehands and then easily picks up a drop shot to maintain his momentum into the start of Set 2.

What a wonderful tie break! Musetti finally claims 9-7 it on a third set point with a howitzer of a crosscourt forehand. It was a fantastic way to conclude a high-quality 73-minute opening set. More of the same please chaps.

What a turnaround by Musetti! He snares the break back and then slices a lovely pick-up down the line. A forehand error from Nole coughs up set point before the Serb just about fends it off with another forehand that clips the edge of the line. It’s 6-6 and another change of ends.

A drop shot just about clips the line for the Serb to claim the early mini break and he remains the more solid player – as he so often is in tie breaks nowadays – to lure the errors from his opponent. The world number one will be irritated after letting that early break slip and sets about tightening up his game and regaining the initiative. This time he doesn’t give the 19-year-old a look-in and nudges the board in his favour.

Smart play! Musetti consolidates with a stylish serve and volley combo. If he can keep this up he could well make a match of this, but that’s easier said than done against the Serbinator.

The Italian defends hard and clatters into a metal board right at the back of his court area. He’s okay to continue and regains his composure quickly to win a slice-off and force deuce. Djokovic lacks his usual consistency and coughs up a break back opportunity when the world number 76 corks a sensational backhand on the run. The Serb looks a tad rattled and hooks tamely into the net. Somewhat unexpectedly we’re back on serve!

BREAK! – DJOKOVIC 3-1 MUSETTI

Novak has already caught Musetti cold on a few occasions with the drop shot. It works a treat once more and lays the foundation for a break to love, which the world number one ties up with a laser-beam crosscourt backhand that clips the line.

That’s much more routine from Djokovic’s point of view. He lets just the one point slip as he eases through the game, completely catching his opponent cold with a bewitching dropshot along the way.

That’s very solid and composed from Lorenzo. He follows up a double fault at 40-15 with an ace down the middle T to ensure that he backed up that positive opening game. He’s already looking right at home on this type of stage.

That’s a nerveless start from the teenager but he’s ultimately unrewarded. He sizzles a stunning backhand winner down the line in the first point of the match and has a nervy-looking Nole on the backfoot at 0-30. Musetti can’t make any impact from there and the 18-time major champion eases to the game from there.
