French Open 2023: 'The toughest question' – Casper Ruud asked to pick between tennis and golf stardom

Casper Ruud stars in the latest episode of Eurosport’s new series, Voice Notes. His first message comes from golf star Viktor Hovland, who puts his fellow Norwegian on the spot by asking him to pick between his two sporting loves. Ruud, who was speaking at the French Open, also fields questions from a selection of other big names, including Ada Hegerberg, Aleksander Kilde and Dominic Thiem.
Voice Notes: Number one in tennis or golf? Ruud put on the spot by Hovland
Casper Ruud was forced to pick between his two sporting dreams on Eurosport’s new series Voice Notes, after fielding a question from golf star Viktor Hovland.
As well as being one of the best tennis players on the circuit, Ruud is also a keen golfer and has a separate Instagram account dedicated to his hobby – appropriately handled @casper_golfer.
So naturally, he was stumped when Hovland asked him: “If you could choose to be the world No. 1 in tennis or golf, what would you choose?”
Ruud, 24, narrowly missed out on the world No. 1 spot in tennis last year after losing the US Open final to Carlos Alcaraz in a match that doubled up as a decider for the top ATP ranking.
“Wow, that’s a great question. The toughest question so far,” Ruud replied to Hovland after taking some time to consider his response.
“I’ve been much closer in tennis than in golf obviously, so I think it’s going to have to be tennis for me.
“I’ve been so close but I haven’t got there yet, while the golf world No. 1 ranking will continue to be a dream until the day I die. So hopefully, I will get one of them.
“I think I’m going to have to go for tennis, even though golf is not a bad option either. I hope you get to world No. 1 as well and that we both could experience that feeling.”
Ruud has his latest opportunity to win a maiden Grand Slam at the French Open, where he reached the final last year, and faces fellow Scandinavian Holger Rune in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Hovland, 25, is also chasing a first golf major having flirted with victory at the Masters and the US PGA Championship in 2023.
