Italian world number 46 Seppi was outclassed as he lost the opening set and struggled even to force the second to a tie-break.
But he came through to push the game to a third set before eventually wrapping up a 1-6 7-6(5) 6-4 victory against the French world number 157.
Eighth seed Ivan Dodig was not so fortunate, however, the Croatian losing 7-6(4) 6-2 to qualifier Daniel Brands, the German consistently holding his nerve better on the big points to win the match.
The biggest surprise of the day was yet to come, however, as Hungarian qualifier Attila Balaza won a two hour 47 minute epic against Slovakia's Lukas Lacko. Balaza, ranked 450th in the world, beat the world number 64 6-7(7) 7-6(2) 6-4 in a fiercely-contested match. Both players held their nerve admirably in a match that witnessed 19 break points but just three breaks of serve.
