Federer scrapes through in Shanghai

Roger Federer scraped through a final set tie-break to beat Leonardo Mayer 7-5 3-6 7-6(7) and reach the third round of the Shanghai Masters - digging deep to save five match points.

The Swiss master saved two match points to make it 5-5 in the decider and rallied from 4-1 down in the tie-break to seal the victory.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rafa Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori suffered surprise early exists.
