Maria Sharapova admitted she would need to improve her game after edging past France's Tatiana Golovin to book her return to the U.S. Open semi-finals on Wednesday. The third-seeded Russian struggled with her serve and forehand but had enough to beat her 18-year-old opponent 7-6 7-6
Sharapova failed to hit top gear until the second tie-break, which she won 7-0 to close out the match.
"I'll definitely need to improve for my next one," said 19-year-old Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbledon champion who will next meet top seed Amelie Mauresmo of France.
Last year, Sharapova lost in the Open semi-finals to eventual winner Kim Clijsters.
