French Open champion Stan Wawrinka made the quarter-finals of the US Open at Flushing Meadows after fighting off unheralded American Donald Young.
The Swiss star looked in charge of the match as he claimed the opening set against a journeyman opponent who had enjoyed a dream run into the second week for only the second time in his career.
Young refused to lie down against the fifth seed, however, turning on the style just as Wawrinka lost his timing, and winning the second set for the loss of a single game to square the match.
With things going against him, Wawrinka lost his cool at times - even smashing a racquet, a moment of petulance which he atoned for by giving the remnants to a young fan.
But the temper explosion didn't last long. Wawrinka broke straight away in the third set, however, and thereafter never looked seriously threatened as he won 6-4 1-6 6-3 6-4.
The Swiss will face either Britain's Andy Murray or South Africa's Kevin Anderson in the last eight.
