French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko overcame Spain's Lara Arruabarrena with a 6-2 1-6 6-1 victory in a rain-hit match in the US Open first round.
The 12th seed from Latvia started the match on Court 17, but got a taste of Arthur Ashe Stadium as she was allowed to finish the match on the tournament's main show court after rain forced the day's play to be abandoned on the outside courts.
The 20-year-old with the blistering attacking strategy won 12 out of the final 14 points resuming 3-1 clear in the final set to secure her progress.
“It was raining the whole day and we had to stop, but actually I’m really lucky to play on this court and feel this atmosphere,” Ostapenko said after the match, having started the encounter on Court 17.
“You’re waiting and you don’t really know what to do. It’s tough on those rainy days.
“I was trying to serve well and I think it did go well. I just wanted to finish the match and relax a little bit.”
