Ninth seed Venus Williams reached her 12th quarter-final at the US Open after battling past Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 3-6 6-1.
The American - champion here back in 2000 and 2001 – responded from being broken three times in the second set to produce a stunning performance in the decider.
Suarez Navarro simply had no response in the final set as Williams won six games in a row to wrap it up in just under two hours.
Next for 37-year-old Williams is Petra Kvitova, who beat third seed Garbine Muguruza to reach the last eight.
Williams who got off to the perfect start on Arthur Ashe as she broke Suarez Navarro immediately, but a mammoth sixth game – which featured five deuces – saw the Spaniard level up at 3-3.
Not deterred by that drop of serve, Williams rattled off three games in a row to take the opening set after 44 minutes on court.
It was Suarez Navarro’s turn to win three on the trot at the start of the second set, and while she relinquished her double break in the following game, the Spaniard went on to break Williams once more to set up a decider.
Though Suarez Navarro won the opening game of the final set, Williams rattled through the next six games to reach the quarter-finals in style.
