Sixth seed Milos Raonic survived a tense first set to see off world number 53 Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6(5) 6-2 7-6(4).
The big Canadian, who lost in last year's final to Andy Murray, had to come through a tie-break against the German in the first set.
He rattled the next one off 6-2 and was serving for the game at 5-4 up in the third, but Struff broke back at the crucial moment to keep his hopes alive.
Another tie-break followed and Raonic was able to take it for the loss of just four points as he sealed a straight-sets win.
The Canadian will next take on Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the second round.
