Wimbledon 2017: Daniil Medvedev forced to apologise as fans react to coin-throwing incident

Daniil Medvedev’s upset by Ruben Bemelmans in the second round of the men’s singles competition at Wimbledon caused an even bigger upset on Wednesday after the Russian reacted angrily at match officials.

Belgian Bemelman, who is ranked at 124 in the world compared to no.49 Medvedev, took two hours and 50 minutes to beat the favourite by 6-4 6-2 3-6 2-6 6-3.

But Medvedev, who saw fifth seed Stan Wawrinka out of the competition on Monday, was unhappy with the result and caused a scene on Court 16.

Having been enjoying a 2-0 lead in the deciding set, Bemelman won five consecutive games to take the lead, causing Medvedev to become angered by the umpire’s decisions.

After asking the supervisor to remove the umpire, a request which was not met, he took out his wallet and threw coins at the umpire’s chair – a reaction which sparked outrage among tennis fans.

While others were just confused

Medvedev was forced to apologise during his post-match press conference, insisting his actions “meant nothing.”
