Francesca Schiavone was stretched to the limit by American Jamea Jackson before edging through to the second round of the Bali International on Monday. The fourth-seeded Italian took two hours 27 minutes to earn a 6-4 3-6 6-4 victory over her 19-year-old opponent.
"It was very tough, but I was tired because I had problems with the flight and it took me 40 hours to get here from New York," said Schiavone.
Schiavone struggled with her serve in the early stages, but after failing to convert five break points to lead 5-3 she finally broke Jackson's serve at 5-4 with a well-executed drop shot.
The Italian failed to build on her advantage, double-faulting a fifth time to give Jackson a 1-0 lead in the second set. Jackson broke again to lead 4-1, failed to serve out the set at 5-2 but broke a third time to level the match.
Schiavone built a 5-1 lead in the third but struggled to close out the match. Jackson held two points to level at 5-5 before Schiavone finally claimed victory on her fifth match point.
Seventh seed Na Li, the Chinese number one, swept aside Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain 6-3 6-1 and Rika Fujiwara of Japan earned a second round clash with top seed Lindsay Davenport by squeezing past South Africa's Natalie Grandin 6-4 2-6 7-6.
