Dementieva holds on to win

Third seed Dementieva wasted little time in the first set and looked poised to complete a routine victory over an opponent who was still suffering the after effects of a long semi-final match the night before.

But the 21-year-old Serbian settled into the second set and chased down every ball to fight her way back into the match eventually levelling at one set all.

In a topsy-turvy match Dementieva then raced out to a 3-0 lead and Jankovic looked to be beaten calling for a medical timeout due to heat sickness.

The break didn't seem to do the Russian any harm either as she quickly moved on to a 5-0 lead.

With a Herculean effort, Jankovic somehow found the energy to fight back to 5-4 but in the end could not keep it up as Dementieva closed out the match on her fifth match point.

The Los Angeles title is Dementieva's second of the season and the winner should push her further up the ranks to inside the top five
