After making headlines with victory over Leylah Fernandez in round one, Andreeva has continued her remarkable form at the Madrid Open by seeing off world No.14 Beatriz Haddad Maia in a resilient display which saw her recover from several breaks to ensure she would progress to the next round of the competition. She will play Poland’s Magda Linette next.

Russia’s teenage tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva has continued her astonishing run at the Madrid Open by reaching the third round with victory over world No.14 Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The 15-year-old came through 7-6(6) 6-3 just a day after seeing off 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez.
Andreeva lost her serve to love early in the first set but instantly broke back. However, she lost serve again the very next game before failing to take three break points to level.
This provided a huge test of her character on the big stage and she showed what she is made of by later breaking back and then going on to earn a set point. She failed to convert it, though, and the first set went to a tie break.
Again, Andreeva’s resilience was on display as she found herself 6-3 down after losing back-to-back serves. The teenager proceeded to save three set points before working an opportunity to produce one of her own which she duly took to move a set ahead.
First set missed chances were clearly playing on Haddad Maia’s mind as Andreeva broke her in the opening game of the second set, and from here she asserted her authority.
At 4-3 ahead, Andreeva saved a breakpoint before serving out to take her one game away from the next round.
Incredibly, she broke to love to seal yet another momentous victory.
Andreeva will face Poland’s Magda Linette in the last 32.
Speaking after her win, she said, “I'm a bit surprised to be in the third round but also everyone was telling me they are playing the same level as you, they are just more consistent.
"Their mental level is different but the game-level is almost the same."
