Top seed Ons Jabeur crashed out of the San Diego Open with a 6-4 7-6(4) defeat to Anastasia Potapova on Wednesday.
In her first match since losing in the US Open fourth round last week, the Tunisian was broken six times as she suffered another disappointing loss.
"Obviously, I’m very happy because she’s a very tough opponent," said Potapova, who will face Sofia Kenin in the last eight.
"She’s one of the best in the world, there’s no doubt about this."
Earlier, third seed Maria Sakkari progressed to the last eight, while Kenin reached her first quarter-final since January.
Sakkari was leading 6-3 2-2 against Camila Osorio when the Colombian was forced to retire with a thigh injury.
It was the world No. 9’s first match since a shock first-round exit to Rebeka Masarova at the US Open, and earned her a clash with Emma Navarro as she seeks her first title of 2023.
"It's always very sad and unfortunate to see any athlete, any player, being injured and not being able to compete 100%," Sakkari said.
"She was playing great in that first set. I wish her all the best and a speedy recovery."
The 28-year-old claimed the only break of the match in the opening set and saved the one break point she faced, while winning 73% of first serve points.
She will be joined in the last eight by Kenin, who overcame fellow American Katie Volynets in a three-set thriller.
Things looked bleak for the former Australian Open champion when she won just one game in the opening set.
But she recovered to claim a 1-6 6-4 6-2 victory and earn a quarter-final clash against Potapova.
The 24-year-old, ranked No. 93 in the world, is into just her second quarter-final of the season and her first since reaching the semis in Hobart back in January.
There were breaks aplenty in a topsy-turvy match, with Kenin breaking seven times and Volynets eight times.
It continues an impressive run for the American, who shocked No. 6 seed Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets in the first round.
Later, second seed Caroline Garcia defeated Sloane Stephens 6-3 3-6 6-1 to earn a quarter-final clash with Danielle Collins.
Beatriz Haddad Maia also went through in three sets, beating Marta Kostyuk 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2.
Next she will meet former world No. 2 Barbora Krejcikova, who defeated Anhelina Kalinina 6-3 6-2 to end a four-match losing streak.
