Britain Strike Gold at Lake Placid

He powered clear of the German duo of Tim-Ole Mietz and Niklas Illig to clinch gold and Britain's first medal of the Games.

It was also a memorable day for Spain as they landed double gold at Whiteface Mountain in the men's and women's combined. Albert Ortega took gold in the men's competition before Celia Abad snatched gold in the women's with the last run of the super-G segment.

Japan added yet another gold on a busy Monday of action as Lin Naknishi dominated the race to win the women's ski cross freestyle, with Nikola Fricova taking silver for Slovenia and Canada's Elizabeth Anne Filiatrault winning bronze. But Japan had to settle for silver in the women's individual normal hill ski jumping final as Poland's Nicole Konderla struck gold with an overall score of 231.6.

The men's individual normal hill ski jumping went to Danil Vassilyev, winning Kazakhstan's second gold medal of the games, from the Austrian duo of Maximilian Lienher and Timon-Pascal Kahofer.

Meanwhile, the speed skating oval saw a day of smashed records as Italy's Riccardo Lorello was crowned men's 5,000m speed skating champion, breaking the 43-year-old track record in the process. Laura Hall of Canada also set a new record as she skated to success in the women's 3000m, crossing the line in 4:25.70.

There was also a first medal of the games for Ukraine as they took bronze in the single mixed relay biathlon race, with Czech Republic's Tereza Jandova and Jakub Kocian sealing gold from the French pair of Pauline Machut and Axel Garnier.

Tuesday sees another busy day of action, with six golds to be won in Alpine, cross-country, Nordic combined, and speed skating.
