Having sealed four silvers and one bronze, it was a welcome victory for Team USA as Malacinski and Nichols came from behind to snatch victory from the Japanese duo of Takuya Nakazawa and Sakutaro Kobayashi.
Despite coming up short in the Nordic combined, it was another golden day for Japan, as they landed two more gold medals to extend their lead at the top of the medal table with 11.
At the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, Taiyo Nonomura led a Japanese 1-2-3 in the men's 1500 metres crown, recording a new track record in the process. And Ryo Hirose secured his second gold of the Games, and Japan's eleventh, with victory in the men's 10km individual classic final, with the Norwegian duo of Magnus Boe and Andreas Kirkeng taking silver and bronze.
South Korea's Park Ji-woo also landed her second gold of the games when skating to victory in the women's 1500m, following her win in the 3000m. Ji-woo was the last skater to take to the ice and broke the track record with a stunning time of 2:04.41.
Tuesday also saw gold for Finland's Hilla Niemela of Finland in the women's 5km individual classic at Mount van Hoevenberg, while Leonie Floetgen led home a German 1-2 in the women's giant slalom at Whiteface Mountain.
On the curling rink, China's women's team continued their unbeaten start in the round-robin, seeing off Japan 7-3 to make it seven wins from seven.
While it was another day to forget for Britain's women's ice hockey team, who slumped to a 14-0 loss to Canada - Team GB has now conceded 55 goals in their four games.
The action continues at Lake Placid on Wednesday with another bumper day of sport, with gold medals on the line in Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating.
